Corrida Autotopia is a collision of sound, animated photographs and interactive technology that is activated by live music.

The piece began as a series of short sound poems titled Corrida that Brent Lee derived from recordings made on Huron Church Road in Windsor, Ontario, which is one of the busiest truck routes in North America as it leads to the Ambassador Bridge crossing to the United States. The sound poems collage and compress the same 30 minutes of source recording in different ways in order to condense and re-interpret the experience of confronting traffic.

After hearing the audio Lee created, Owen Eric Wood created a video version of Meghan Krauss’ photographic series Autotopia (2012), in which she compresses time by taking many digital photographs of a single urban landscape and then carefully cutting up and stitching together pieces of these images in order to populate streets with traffic. For Krauss, an overcrowded roadway is a metaphor for the psyche of contemporary society.

Nicolas de Cosson took this project to the next level by programming a Max patch that allows live musicians to activate a toy racecar set. Whenever the musicians play, the sound they created is feed into the program and causes the cars to move around the track. When the musicians stop, so do the cars.
