Subatomic Time (2010-2015) is a 35-minute performance piece featuring solo percussionist Nicholas Papador, live audio processing, and live video mixing. The work is in seven sections, several of which were premiered in November 2010. The title of the piece reflects the central notion of extremes of spatial and temporal scale; parallels are drawn between camera-related techniques (zoom, focus, pan, colour saturation) and audio processing (amplification, reverberation and filtering, spatialization, spectral manipulations). Aural and visual material is presented sometimes in parallel, sometimes in counterpoint, and sometimes heterophonically. Subatomic Time was recorded in April 2012 in support of a range of documentation strategies including a performance video of the same duration as the live performance, an experimental video based on the audiovisual material, a documentary film about the piece, and a short remix of the audiovisual elements. The complete Subatomic Time was also presented at the Percussive Arts Society International Conference in Austin, Texas in November 2012, and in Jonquière, Québec as part of the Festival de Musiques de Création , Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean in May 2015, where we performed the piece in its entirety, and also presented an audience interactive version.
